Butter-Poppy Seed Knots

Recently, I baked some butter poppy seed knots, not bad since it was my first time making this with a wonky oven.  My oven is terribly wonky but I can’t replace it because it came with the flat hehehe Its “wonkiness” is in the temperature area, the control I think isn’t working, so if the recipe says gas mark 4, and the oven is turned to gas mark 4, in 15 minutes time I think it will turn to the temperature of a gas mark 6!  I had burnt many many cakes and cupcakes hehehe….now I have a oven thermometer, which let me keep track of the tempreture, so far so good 🙂

Ingredients (makes 12)
1 1/4 cups lukewarm milk
4 tablespoons butter, at room temperature
1 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoon active dry yeast
1 egg yolk
2 teaspoons salt
3 1/2 – 4 cups flour
1 eggs beaten with 2 tsp of water for glazing
poppy seeds, for sprinkling
Method
In a large bowl, stir together the milk, butter, sugar and yeast. Leave for 15 minutes, to dissolve and frothy.
Stir in egg yolk, salt and 2 cups of flour, add 1 cup of flour and stir to obtain a soft dough.
Transfer to floured surface and knead, adding flour if neccessary until
smooth and elastic.  Place in a bowl and cover, leave in warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
Grease baking sheets, punch down dough with fist and cut into 12 pieces the size of golf balls.  Roll each to rope, twist to form a knot and place 1 inch apart on the baking sheet.  Cover with tea cloth and leave to rise in warm place until doubled in volumr, 1 – 1 1/2 hours.
Prehead the oven to 350F.
Brush the knots with egg glaze and sprinkle the poppy seeds.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, until tops are lightly browned.  Cool lightly on rack before serving.

Self-striping socks

Self-striping socks

I wonder, would anyone notice that there is something wrong with this pair of socks? Hehehe…..

They are of different size!!

They are of different size!!

This is my second pair I knitted which turned out, different size, not sure what wrong…maybe it could be my knitting tension, as I have a terrible habit of knitting one side of the socks, and leave it for quite a long time, before I knit the other side…by then maybe my knitting tension changed?  Or maybe I picked up the wrong dpn needles?

I love cats!  But unfortunately, I can’t find any of them today on my walk around Jericho.  Where are you kitties?  It’s summer, time to come out for sun and tree climbing hehehe…

I miss my cat, Fifi…not only Fifi, I miss Yee Yee too (my sister’s cat) and a few of my KL neighbour’s cats.  But the last I heard, the neighbour had got rid of all their cats 😮

Fifi in her grumpy mood

Fifi in her grumpy mood

Well, even though Fifi is supposedly my pet but but but she is my mommy’s gal!  She likes my mom better than me…hehehe  she followed my mom during her gardening, she sat underneath my mom’s lazy chair, accompanying my mom in her daily dose of HK Cantonese series on tv.  I guess she is closer to my mom because they spent more time together.  And also my mom filled her feeding bowl and water bowl hehehe

Fifi in her goody mood. There's a reason for this good behaviour! Probably cheese or fish ;-)

Fifi has been with my family for maybe about 9 years, I am not sure of her age because when I rescued her from my “mad” resort director, she was already a small kitten, not a baby kitten.  She was captured and was bound for sea drowning according to one of my colleague as instructed by that director, and so I decided to rescue her with my colleague’s help.  My colleague did most of the rescuing though, he was the one, who broke into the cage and took her out, then gave it to me.  And I hid her in my office desk’s drawer until office hours ended, then transferred her to a envelope box and carried her off home hehehe.
One special character about Fifi is that she doesn’t meow properly or meow much at all.  She is a quiet cat but mad at time, like most cat  AND according to my brother and sister, she is OVERWEIGHT!  She’s only 6kg!
